Cheryl Harness Author and illustrator, Cheryl Harness, has 25 books to her credit and is currently working on numbers 26 and 27. Her non-fiction titles and subjects range from Thomas Jefferson, Abraham Lincoln, the Erie Canal and the Pony Express to Ghosts from the Civil War and Ghosts in the White House. Written for the younger audience, Cheryl has the ability to make historical characters feel real and everyday to children through words and pictures. Her beautifully illustrated books make history and learning fun and interesting for all ages.

Born in 1951, Cheryl’s childhood was mostly influenced with books about Laura & Mary or Betsy & Tacy or Tom & Huck. “They were wonderful stories that just happened to have happened in the past. I like imagining other times. If you can't have a real time-machine, books make a swell consolation prize,” said Harness.

In 1973, she received a degree in art education from Central Missouri State University. “I went to college to be an art teacher. After I did my student teaching, I wound up doing greeting cards for a living. About 15 years ago, I took samples of my paintings to New York and started illustrating books at night, teddy bears by day. As time went by, I began writing, just to see if I could.”

Her books have been published by Simon & Schuster, the National Geographic Society and Harper Collins. Harness, who lives just outside Independence, Missouri, says, “My days are filled with researching, writing, and painting. I go gallivanting all over the country to see historic places and talk about picture books.”

As a dedicated member of the Betsy-Tacy Society, Harness has created and donated a painting to the society. Her original artwork has been reproduced as art prints and note cards to be sold to raise much needed funds for the restoration of Maud Hart Lovelace’s childhood home in Mankato.
